Bella & Otis Investigate: Your Adoption Questions

The most common questions our reporters get, answered in plain English.

How do I adopt a rescue pug?

Start by browsing the rescues above and picking one near you (or one that ships snout kisses nationwide). Most ask you to fill out an adoption application, complete a home check or reference call, and meet any available pugs in foster care before finalizing the adoption. Timelines range from a few days to a few weeks.

Why do pugs end up in rescue?

Pugs are surrendered for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with the dog: owners facing illness, moving, allergies, or financial hardship. Rescues step in to provide medical care, foster homes, and a path to a stable, loving family.

Is a pug rescue different from a shelter?

Yes. A breed-specific rescue like the ones listed here focuses only on pugs (and sometimes pug mixes), usually operates through a foster network rather than a physical shelter, and has deep experience with pug-specific health issues like breathing, skin fold, and joint care.

How much does it cost to adopt a pug?

Adoption fees typically range from about $250 to $600 USD depending on the organization and the dog's age and medical needs. That fee usually covers vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, microchipping, and any urgent veterinary care received in foster care.

What should I ask a rescue before adopting?

Ask about the pug's known health history (especially breathing and eye issues common to the breed), temperament around kids and other pets, what's included in the adoption fee, and what post-adoption support the rescue offers. A good rescue will ask you just as many questions back.
